What are Single-Ply Membrane Roofing Systems?

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

Single-Ply roofing systems are flexible sheets (membranes) that are used to cover and protect flat and low sloped buildings. There are two groups of single-ply membranes the thermosets and thermoplastics. Thermosets are compounded from synthetic rubber polymers, and thermoplastics are plastic based materials they usually include polyester to add a reinforcement layer. There are three main types of single-ply roofing systems:

· TPO – thermoplastic polyolefin

· PVC – polyvinyl chloride

· EPDM – ethylene propylene diene monomer

These roofing systems offer a number of advantages such as flexibility, resistance, and high performing roofing systems. Single-ply systems are popular among commercial developments because of the reflective solutions and strength, among other things.

Depending on the client’s structure and needs we can develop a roofing plan and budget that is tailored to each client, because no two roofs are alike.

The TPO single-ply system is one of the more popular systems because it is engineered for long term performance and it is environmentally sound. TPO is very versatile and highly reflective making this system popular where temperatures are warmer. Most TPO membranes are Energy Star qualified and help reduce a buildings’ energy consumption. TPO membranes are a heat-weldable blend of ethylene propylene rubber and polypropylene, and the membranes have different thickness options making it suitable for a variety of applications and budgets.

The PVC single-ply system has been around for decades and is still proving to be a great choice. PVC is highly resistant to rooftop chemicals such as acids, grease, and oils, that is why this roofing system is a favorite among airports, restaurants, and other commercials facilities that deal with chemical concerns. This system can also help with cost savings as it is reflective, durable, and easy to repair and maintain.

The EPDM single-ply system has also been around for decades and continues to be a frequently used system. This system is very durable and dependable. As EPDM is a synthetic rubber elastomer it is manufactured for exceptional strength and flexibility. This system can too be easily repaired and restored. If your building is in an area where it snows a black surface may be a better option because it can assist with the snow melt on the roof and keep the building warmer. There are options available for black or white surfaces.
